MapThePaths (https://www.mapthepaths.org.uk) is a project to add all the rights of way (RoWs) and permissive paths in England and Wales to OpenStreetMap fully tagged. This accompanying app helps you find the locations of RoWs from council-supplied data while actually out surveying in-the-field, helping you locate where there are missing paths or paths without a designation tag on OSM.

By logging into OSM and using the live-edit mode (which works with the live OSM API), the app also allows you to change the designation of existing OSM ways by long-pressing them. This should *only* be done via on-the-ground observations, as the licensing of some council data does not permit direct copying of the designation from the council data to OSM.

Version 0.2 also allows you to create tagged GPS traces. You can record a trace with the red 'record' button and select the path designation (public footpath, public brldieway etc) and general path type (grass path, dirt track etc) for each path you survey. A GPS trace tagged with these properties will be created, which can be uploaded to OSM and to the MapThePaths server, with the properties converted to OSM highway, designation and surface tags. Also, waypoints are created when the tags change, which can help using the GPS trace to create data in JOSM.

The intention (not yet realised) is to allow a collaborative approach, between beginners and experts, to help map the rights of way of England and Wales. Beginners to OSM will be able to easily survey and tag footpaths using the app, once the UI has been improved. Expert OSM users will then be able to download the tagged traces via an (as-yet-unwritten) JOSM plugin and use them to create OSM ways.

IMPORTANT! Performance might be slow on older or low-spec devices due to the way in which the council and OSM data is drawn. For the same reason it is NOT recommended to use the app in cities; it is optimised for rural areas with a low density of data.

This is FOSS software, licensed under the GPL v3; see https://gitlab.com/nickw1/mapthepaths-android for source code.
