Le site archéologique de Saint-Romain-en-Gal : un des plus grands ensembles consacrés à la civilisation gallo-romaine en France avec sur sept hectares les vestiges du riche quartier résidentiel de Vienna, alors « colonie romaine ». Situé au bord du Rhône, axe majeur pour le transit des marchandises entre Méditerranée et provinces du Nord, ce quartier, comme la ville de Vienne, connait un fort développement dans les années 50 après J.-C. La richesse des habitants s’exprime par le luxe de maisons qui voisinent avec des thermes, des boutiques, des échoppes d’artisans, des ateliers : un des quartiers résidentiels romains les plus étendus découvert en France ! Pour répondre aux exigences d’un musée de site, assurer la présentation, l’étude et la conservation des collections, Philippe Chaix et Jean-Paul Morel, lauréats du concours d’architectes, ont réalisé deux bâtiments très différents dans leur conception. L’ensemble, achevé en 1996, représente une surface de plus de 12 000 m2. Le long du fleuve, le bâtiment d’exposition permanente édifié au-dessus d’une maison romaine est implanté sur pilotis. Perpendiculaire au Rhône, le bâtiment d’accueil aux structures de béton apparaît fortement ancré au sol. Il accueille les différentes fonctions du musée : billetterie, exposition temporaire, boutique et restaurant, ainsi qu’un centre de recherches et un atelier de restauration des mosaïques. Construit sur pilotis, le bâtiment d’exposition permanente est une véritable structure aérienne qui épouse fidèlement le plan d’un îlot de la ville romaine exploré avant sa construction. Transparent sur toutes ses façades, le bâtiment d’exposition permanente offre une vue d’ensemble sur le quartier gallo-romain de Saint-Romain-en-Gal, le Rhône et la ville de Vienne sur la rive gauche. Élément fort du paysage, le musée placé dans le prolongement du pont sur le Rhône assure symboliquement la continuité entre les deux rives, référence évidente à l’unité urbaine de l’époque romaine.
