New Tab Override Extension

Most extensions that allow a custom URL for the new tab page do so by redirecting to the URL then attempting to focus on the address bar.

The second step of focusing on the address bar when using the redirect method was broken in Chrome 61.

This extension fixes the second step by using a new method, rather than redirecting it loads the URL in the background then injects its content into a empty new tab page.

This means there is no redirect, and therefore the address bar never actually loses focus in the first place.

Permissions:
* Read and change all your data on the websites that you visit - Used only to load the URL in the background, none of your data or websites you visit are ever read or changed.
* Replace the page that you see when opening a new tab - Duh!

Adelscott (ID: 00000031ee23f6ab) Voted 1 ★ - Updated 06/12/2023 I wanted to keep the chrome://newtab feature with my 10 prefered urls showing under the search field. and I wanted to focus the search field (and not the address bar). I guess it's not possible to have both with this extension ..

Ivan (ID: 0000001b1340b207) Voted 5 ★ - Updated 05/01/2021 Great extension, especially since Chrome doesn't let you set a different new tab page. I wanted to make a custom startpage for Chrome but Chrome doesn't let you do that. The closest thing to that is setting a website that will open on startup, but then when you click new tab it goes to the Chrome new tab.
