Sanity Extension

From an updated look, to repaired and completely new site features, Sanity's ultimate goal is to give users the things they need. It's 2018, and the internet is a very different place than it was ten—or even five!—years ago. The evolution of the internet means sites need to evolve with it or get left in the dust.

Unfortunately (but understandably), a lot of the tools we love to use for our journaling sites have long since been abandoned, so I decided to create an extension with the hopes of breathing new life into Insanejournal, both in appearance and function.

Whether you're a roleplayer, a personal blogger, or you post fanfiction or resources, Sanity's here to help make your experience better. Sanity doesn't focus on one type of site user so much as all of us! While the majority of us are here to roleplay and/or create related resources for the hobby, all the tools I've integrated into the Sanity extension are here to fit any need!

Looking for a way to install Sanity extensions for Chrome, you can search for them in the Chrome Web Store, clicking the "Add to Chrome" button, and following the straightforward process.

However, you may need to install Sanity extensions manually, this article outlines two simple methods to effortlessly install Sanity extensions, whether they come as unpacked folders in compressed formats like .zip or as .crx files.

Method 1: Download Sanity extension and manually install through Drag &Drop

If you ever need to manually install a Sanity extension for Chrome, don't worry, it's a simple process. Just follow these easy steps, and you will have your extension ready to use in no time.

Step 1: Download the Sanity Extension by clicking the "Download CRX" button on the website.

Look for the Sanity extension you wish to install. Go to the website and download the Sanity extension package, which is usually a .CRX file and comes in a zipped file. Here ".crx" file is the format for Sanity extension that contains all the data.

Step 2: Extract &Arrange Files

Once the file is downloaded, extract that file into its own folder. Similarly, give that extension files a permanent home. In other words, keep it in a folder that you don't accidentally delete it because these files will be needed to make that extension work.

Open Google Chrome and in the address bar, type chrome://extensions; it will open the Google Chrome extensions page. Make sure that "My extensions" is selected in the sidebar.

Step 4: Drag and Drop the Extension

Now, go to the folder where you extracted the Sanity extension and drag &drop the extension file from there anywhere onto the extension page within Google Chrome.

Step 5: Complete the Installation

Once you drag and drop the extension file, follow the steps that Google Chrome takes you through. Similarly, if the extension file is of .crx file format, you will be required to review the permissions and then add the extension.

Now, you can manage that added extension as you would like to with any other Chrome extension that you added through Chrome Webstore. Its icon will also appear in the Google Chrome Menu on the right side of the address bar once you activate it.

Method 2: Download Sanity extension for Chrome and install in Developer Mode

This is another method to install Sanity extension manually, but the twist is that here, you install by enabling the developer mode option provided in Google Chrome. This mode is commonly used for testing extensions or running unpublished tools.

Step 1: Download the Sanity extension file

Select and download the Sanity extension by clicking the 'Download CRX' button on the website.

Step 2: Extract the downloaded contents

Convert the file to a ZIP file if it is in CRX format then extract the Sanity extension zip file or folder that you downloaded. Make sure you extract it using the same folder name and keep it safely in another folder, so you don't delete it by mistake. The extracted folder will be needed to keep your Sanity extension running.

Step 3: Open Chrome Extension Setting Page

In the address bar of Google Chrome, type chrome://extensions and open the Chrome Extension Page.

Step 4: Enable Developer Mode

After opening the Chrome Extension page, look at the top right side, and you will find the toggle option of "Developer mode."Simply enable that developer mode option.

Step 5: Load the Unpacked Extension

Once you enable the developer mode option, you will see the menu of Load Unpacked, Pack Extensions and Update. From that, select the option "Load unpacked."

Step 6: Select the Extension Folder

Once the pop-up opens upon clicking Load unpacked, select the Sanity extension directory and click on the "Select Folder "button.

Step 7: Confirm and Install

After you select an extension folder of a Google Chrome extension you're installing manually, confirm its installation for the final time and let the installation complete.

Nina Ober (ID: 00000045e7dba330) Voted 5 ★ - Updated 09/16/2018 Holy carp, never has IJ looked so good. I can't get over what a difference Sanity makes. I usually use Dreamwidth for all my journaling needs, because what they lack in icon space they make up for in aesthetics, but with Sanity installed, I've been using IJ more and more. It's so crisp, so clean, and pleasing to use. I could never go back to a life without Sanity!

Anna Bee (ID: 00000049eb19a487) Voted 5 ★ - Updated 07/08/2018 I absolutely love what this extension has done for the site. Having gone from Livejournal to Insanejournal one of the things I find so frustrating about the IJ is the looks exactly the way it did when I first signed up. Sanity gives it a fresh look, and I love the added features that resolve long-standing site issues. The overhaul of "My IJ" and the functioning character counter on comments? Love it so much. As someone who runs a game on the site, I will be promoting it for my user group and hope it overall enhances everyone's time on IJ.

El Noble (ID: 000000da0c5c7d78) Voted 5 ★ - Updated 07/07/2018 What do you do when you're already supplying the cleanest, most user-friendly layouts and in-entry codes on IJ? Apparently you move on to making the site itself cleaner and more user-friendly! This extension gives me pretty much everything I've wished for from IJ over the years I've been using it, and some features that I didn't even realize I needed (character counts!!!). Even better, it's all for less than you'd pay for a single permanent account. And, with it being a Tessisamess product, you know you're going to get the best support for it that it's possible for a single person to give. If you use IJ extensively, you need this extension. Period. It's going to change your life. I already don't want to imagine going back to using IJ without it!

Dee Lane (ID: 0000003b38cecb3a) Voted 5 ★ - Updated 07/07/2018 This is an exceptionally user friendly and functional extension. Easy to use and so much nicer to look at. The additional features make IJ browsing and general appearance all the more better. Like the select all functions on userpics, comments and on notification pages. Alerts for PM's is something that's been largely needed for IJ, and this extension allows for it. It's sleek and stylish, breaks up the clumps of style editing in the S2 format and it replaces some of the outdated and clumpy icons with really subtle and attractive ones. There's a character count so you know when your post or comment are getting near the quota, which is so helpful for those of us who ramble a lot. It's an absolute treat for the eyes, and makes using IJ all the more friendlier. I'm really excited for this extension and the ease of use it's going to allow.
